The Young Lawyers Section will celebrate Law Week 2009 from April 27-May 2, 2009. All of the events will focus on the ABA’s Law Week theme "A Legacy of Liberty: Celebrating Lincoln's Bicentennial."

Judge’s Reception - April 27:

In honor of Law Day, the YLS will host a "Meet the Judges Reception" at the CBA on Monday, April 27, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. Judges from the Circuit Court of Cook County, Appellate Court, and Federal Court will be invited to attend. Includes cocktails and appetizers. To RSVP for the complimentary event, call 312-554-2032 or email yls@chicagobar.org. Space is limited.

 

Liberty Bell Award - April 27:

Presented at the Judge’s Reception to a nonlawyer whose exemplary community service has advanced the ideals of law and justice. This year’s award will be presented by Justice Mary Jane Theis of the Illinois Appellate Court.

 

Senior Symposium - April 28:

A unique workshop on estate planning for seniors will be held during Law Week at the Chicago Cultural Center.

 

Bill of Rights/Constitution Law Project - April 28

Attorney volunteers are needed to participate in a public service project with the 6th graders at Decatur Classical Elementary School on April 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., with a training session held at the school from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers will facilitate a lesson plan that addresses the Bill of Rights and will discuss subsequent Constitutional Amendments including the 13th Amendment in celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s Bicentennial. Decatur Elementary is located at 7030 N. Sacramento. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to the school. Law Day Celebration - April 30:

The CBA Symphony, composed of judges, lawyers, and law students, will perform musical selections at a free concert at the Richard J. Daley Center on April 30, 2009, at Noon.

 

You and the Law "Law Day Live" Call-In Show - April 30

CBA TV’s "Law Day Live" Call-In Show will air during Law Week on Thursday, April 30, 20009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Chicago Access Network Channel 21 in Chicago. Topics that will be covered:

1:30--Disability Under Social Security

2:00--Special Education Advocacy

2:30--Adoption

3:00--Estate Planning

3:30--Criminal Law

 

Call-A-Lawyer - May 2:

Callers will have the opportunity to speak to an attorney for free on Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. by calling 312-554-2001.

 

Lincoln Bicentennial: Gala Celebration with Doris Kearns Goodwin - May 2
As the finale of the CBA's Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration, the Association will host a Gala Dinner on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Navy Pier's Grand Ballroom featuring world-renowned author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. The event will also feature the CBA Symphony Orchestra performing Copland's Lincoln Portrait (narrated by Harry Porterfield) and the CBA Chorus will join the Orchestra to perform Wilhousky's "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Cornelia Grumman, a former editorial page editor at The Chicago Tribune, will announce the award-winning student entries from the CBA's Lincoln Essay Contest.

Doris Kearns Goodwin has been reporting on politics and baseball for over two decades. Mrs. Goodwin is the author of several books and has written for leading national publications. She is a commentator for NBC, and a consultant and on-air person for PBS documentaries on Lyndon B. Johnson, the Kennedy Family, Franklin Roosevelt, and Ken Burns’ The History of Baseball. She was the first female journalist to enter the Red Sox locker room. Her most recent work, a monumental history of Abraham Lincoln entitled Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, published in October 2005, joined the best-seller lists on its first week in publication, and soon reached #1 on the New York Times Best-Seller List. Team of Rivals won the 2006 Lincoln Prize for an outstanding work about the president and/or the Civil War, the inaugural New York Historical Society Book Prize, the Richard Nelson Current award and the New York State Archives History Makers Award. Steven Spielberg is developing a feature film about the book, set to star Liam Neeson as Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary.
