About Kathy Morris
Career Advancement Program Featuring Kathy Morris of Under Advisement, Ltd.
Kathy Morris is the featured career counselor at the center of the Chicago Bar Association's new, multi-dimensional Career Advancement Program (CAP).
After handling criminal cases in courtrooms from Massachusetts to Hawaii and directing the Career Services office at Northwestern Law School, where she also was a faculty member over the years teaching legal writing and legal ethics, Kathy opened Under Advisement, Ltd. in 1988 to career counsel lawyers and law students. She also created a Career Resource Center for the ABA in 2000, after reinventing its Center for CLE.
Kathy is also a national leader and innovator in law firm professional development. She founded the Chicago Law Firm Training Consortium and was a charter Board Member of the Professional Development Consortium. She has worked inside law firms, blazing trails in director and chief hiring and training officer roles at Katten Muchin and the firm formerly known as Gardner Carton (now Drinker Biddle), and most recently by building the first lawyer training team and creating firm wide curricular initiatives for Sidley Austin, LLP.
After enjoying a sabbatical, Kathy is happily back to running Under Advisement full time, guiding firms and individuals and conducting what she calls Inplacement as well as Outplacement. She is a frequent speaker and author on legal career issues, with a new monthly series of career webinars sponsored for its members by the ABA, columns formerly running in both the CBA Record and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and three legal career manuals published by the ABA. Kathy now answers a new career question each Monday on her website at www.underadvisement.com.
Another of Kathy's current impact projects is the Legal Profession PREP CLASS, designed to draw law schools and the practicing bar into conversation, through a survey for all walks of lawyers on their opinions on needed practice readiness skills. The Chicago pilot will culminate in courses on finding a job and starting it well, to be offered to upperclass law students and lawyers at no charge, held at the CBA in early 2014 before PREP CLASS expands to additional cities.
Kathy received her JD in 1975 from Northeastern Law School in Boston and her BA with Honors in 1971 from the University of Michigan.
