Career Advancement Program Featuring Kathy Morris of Under Advisement, Ltd.


Kathy Morris is the featured career counselor at the center of the Chicago Bar Association's multi-dimensional Career Advancement Program (CAP).

After handling criminal cases in courtrooms from Massachusetts to Hawaii and directing the Career Services office at Northwestern Law School, where she also was a faculty member over the years teaching legal ethics, Kathy opened Under Advisement, Ltd. in 1988 to help lawyers and law students find jobs and enjoy satisfying careers. She also created a Career Resource Center for the ABA in 2000 and the ABA Legal Career Central in 2015.

Kathy is also an innovator in attorney professional development. She founded the Chicago Law Firm Training Consortium and was a charter Board Member of the Professional Development Consortium. She has worked inside law firms, blazing trails in director and chief hiring and training officer roles at Katten Muchin, Gardner Carton (now Drinker Biddle), and most recently Sidley Austin.

After enjoying a year-long sabbatical in 2012, Kathy is happily running Under Advisement full time guiding legal workplaces, law schools, law students, and lawyers and conducting what she calls Inplacement as well as Outplacement. She is a frequent speaker, program moderator, and author on legal career issues, and she answers new career questions on Mondays on her Career Corner blog on the Under Advisement website at Kathy also tweets weekdays @LawyerCounselor.

Another of Kathy's ongoing impact projects is the Legal Profession PREP CLASS, designed to draw law schools and the practicing bar into conversation, through a survey for all walks of lawyers, on law school graduates' still needed practice readiness skills. 

Kathy received her JD in 1975 from Northeastern Law School in Boston and her BA with Honors in 1971 from the University of Michigan.
