Law Week

The Young Lawyers Section will celebrate Law Week 2013 from April 27-May 3, 2013. All of the events will focus on the American Bar Association’s Law Week theme "Realizing the Dream Equality for All."

Call-A-Lawyer - April 27 (Open to the Public)
Callers will have the opportunity to speak to an attorney for free on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m., by calling 312-554-2001. Sponsored by the CBA Lawyer Referral Service.


Wills for Heroes Event - April 27
The YLS will be hosting a Wills for Heroes event on April 27, 2013 from 9:00 a.m.-2 p.m..  If you are able to volunteer for this event please RSVP  by clicking on this link and entering your information http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WFH042713.  You do not need to be an attorney to volunteer, nor do you need to have any estate planning experience.  Volunteer slots will fill up quickly. Click here for details.  

Through the events coordinated by the committee, volunteer lawyers create free wills and other estate planning documents for local emergency first responders and their spouses or partners.  Since November 2001, the Wills for Heroes program has prepared over 7,000 estate-planning documents for first responders.  


Judge’s Reception - April 30
In honor of Law Day, the YLS will host its annual "Meet the Judges Reception" at the CBA on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at 4:30 p.m. Judges from the Circuit Court of Cook County, Appellate Court, and Federal Court will be invited to attend. Liberty Bell Award - April 30
Presented at the Judge’s Reception to a nonlawyer whose exemplary community service has advanced the ideals of law and justice. This year's award will be presented by the Honorable Sharon Johnson Coleman, U.S. District Court Northern District of Illinois.


Lawyers in the Classroom - May 1
The YLS has been paired with 5th and 6th grade classes at Decatur Elementary, 7030 N Sacramento, to participate in Lawyers in the Classroom on the morning/early afternoon of May 1. The project aims to help local elementary students understand the U.S. Constitution and our legal System. Volunteers will be provided materials and asked to attend a one hour training on how to lead the interactive lessons. Transportation is the responsibility of the volunteer. Law Day Celebration - May 2 (Open to the Public)
The YLS will host a free concert at the Richard J. Daley Center on May 2, 2013, at Noon. The CBA Symphony, composed of judges, lawyers, and law students, will perform musical selections. In addition, speeches from various bar association members. A keynote speaker will give their personal reflections on the Law Week theme "Realizing the Dream Equality for All."


Law Day Live - May 2 (Open to the Public)
The CBA Television Committee will present "Law Day Live" on Ustream from 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.  During several 30-minute segments, each focused on a particular area of the law, viewers are encouraged to call in live with questions to the attorney hosts and guests. Submit your questions to attorneys (in advance or during the broadcast).
