The CBA and CBF will sponsor Chicago's 9th Annual Pro Bono Week from October 21-25, 2013. The Week is chaired by Patricia Brown Holmes, Schiff Hardin LLP, and Gretchen Slusser, Cabrini Green Legal Aid.


The CBA and the CBF launched our annual Pro Bono Week with the twin goals of honoring lawyers' pro bono efforts and educating the public and the legal community about how these lawyers are improving the lives of the less fortunate. In 2013, Chicago will be joined by communities across the country for the fifth time in the American Bar Association's National Pro Bono Celebration.


Pro Bono Week features several events for the legal community, including:


20th Annual CBA Young Lawyers Section's Pro Bono and Community Service Fair
Co-sponsored by The Chicago Bar Foundation and Kirkland & Ellis LLP
Thursday, October 24, 2013; 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Meet with representatives from 50 of Chicago's legal aid, pro bono and community service organizations to network with likeminded professionals and uncover the volunteer opportunity you have been seeking. The event will be held at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, 300 N. LaSalle St., Chicago. Refreshments will be served. Please note: This complimentary event is open to law students and lawyers of all levels of legal experience. The evening's program will indicate the level of experience required by a particular organization. See a list of participating organizations (in PDF).


MCLE Programs at The Chicago Bar Association
Complimentary MCLE programs will be held at the CBA (unless otherwise noted). In the spirit of Pro Bono Week, attendees are expected to accept a pro bono case in any area of law within the next six months following the MCLE program. Seminars include:


  • Clients, Interpreters & You: How to Work Well with Clients who have Limited English Proficiency
    Monday, October 21, 2013; 3:00-5:00 p.m. (2 IL PR Credit, subject to approval)

     A nuts and bolts training on how to build relationships with LEP clients, work with interpreters both inside and outside of the courtroom and more.

  • Legal and Social Consequences of a Criminal Record:  Helping Clients Overcome These Barriers
    Tuesday, October 22, 2013; 2:00-4:00 p.m. (2 IL MCLE Credit)

    A look at the disparate impact of the criminal justice system, the civil legal consequences and forms of advocacy that can take place in our communities to become change agents.

  • Movies on Trial:  To Kill a Mockingbird
    A special event presented by Schopf & Weiss LLP
    Friday, October 25, 2013; 12:00-4:00 p.m./Music Box Theater, 3733 N. Southport, Chicago/Lunch and Popcorn (0.5 IL MCLE and 0.5 IL PR Credit)

    Movies on Trial is a CLE event where the magic of Hollywood meets insightful legal debate. Please join us for a special Pro Bono Week screening of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” followed by a riveting panel discussion of this beloved American classic.
