Hop the Bus to Springfield with the Young Lawyers Section!

The Young Lawyers Section is set to explore Springfield, Illinois on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. The group will depart from the CBA via bus (or make your own arrangements to drive/carpool) to explore Springfield, learn more about Illinois' legislative process, how to lobby and make new connections.  Law students and attorneys of all experience levels are welcome.

Attendees will be given access to "Making Sausage and Legislation in Illinois: What Every Lawyer Needs to Know About Illinois' Legislative Process" to view on their own via Webcast. (1.75 IL MCLE).


Wednesday, April 29:

  • 6:30-7:00 a.m. -- Check-In/Bus departure to Springfield
  • 10:30-11:00 a.m. -- Welcome to Springfield

  • 11:00-11:45 a.m. -- Getting a Balanced Budget in Illinois
    Ever wonder how a bill becomes a law? How many bills are considered by the Illinois legislature every year? What is the difference between the capital budget and the operating budget? In this unique program setting, attendees will get an opportunity to meet Senator John Cullerton and get answers to these questions and many more. (While we have a list of questions to ask the Senator, attendees are also encouraged to ask questions.)

  • 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. -- Young Lawyers Lobbying in Springfield Q&A
    Government & Legislative Affairs staff for Chicago Public Schools and the City of Chicago discuss ethics in lobbying and their lives as young lawyers in Springfield. The panel will discuss how to achieve their employer's legislative goals and how to lobby for a cause in Springfield. Panelists will answer questions related to their work-life balance and give tips for young lawyers interested in lobbying.
