YLS Journal
The YLS Journal is published in the CBA Record
(eight times a year). It provides members with a compilation of both
substantive and procedural articles as well as news of YLS projects and
activities. The February/March issue is dedicated to the YLS. This
year's special issue centers around the theme of "Leadership
Through Service." Articles include "Getting Back by Giving Back" by
Clare McMahon and "Leadership by Design" by Jasmine Villaflor

Minute with a
Judge
Ever appear in front of a particular judge and wonder how he or she
operates? The YLS decided took on a new initiative to help young lawyers
acquaint themselves with judges: Minute with a Judge. An expansion of
the YLS’s successful Lunch with a Judge program, which began in
2006 and continues today, Minute with a Judge provides short webcast
interviews of individual judges who offer practice tips for attorneys
and their particular do's and don'ts when it comes to appearing before
them.

Tips for Young Lawyers
Over the course of the 2010-2011 bar year the YLS Officers wrote
articles for the Daily Law Bulletin that shared insights on issues that
have have made them who they are today.

Publications
The CBA's Legal Bookstore offers member discounts on the latest legal
publications, many geared for the young lawyer. Some are currently
available for download (see bottom of this page) or available thru the
bookstore. Sample titles include: The Chicago Lawyer's Court Handbook,
Getting Paid Tips, YLS Guide to Real Estate Practice, Lawyers'
Professional Responsibility Guide as well as other legal resource
guides.
Starting
and Growing Your Business e-book
In recognition of the difficult business environment in which small
businesses operate and the fact that many small businesses simply cannot
afford the legal and professional services necessary to navigate these
difficult times, the CBA Young Lawyers Section partnered with the Small
Business Advocacy Council to create an educational e-book for small
business owners. The Starting and Growing Your Business e-book
provides small business owners with general information in a number of
areas of the law and business. This 12-chapter e-book includes
advice on: writing a business plan; financing; physical office space;
virtual and shared office space; legal structure; registering your
business and state, local and federal taxes, permits, licenses;
accounting and record keeping; legal steps in hiring, firing and
maintaining employees; developing a marketing plan; web and online
marketing/presence; networking; and succession planning for small
business owners.
