DESCRIPTION:Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Cultural Rite of Passage or a Violation of International Human Rights Law?\n\nThis past December\, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution condemning the practice of female genital mutilation/cutting (aka "female circumcision")\, the first time that this practice has been denounced at such a high level. Please join us for this very timely discussion on the legality of a procedure that three million women and girls are said to be forced to undergo each year. Elisabeth Ward\, Executive Director of DePaul's International Human Rights Law Institute\, will be with us to frame the issue of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) under international human rights law and discuss cultural relativist criticisms of the international movement to end the practice.
