Earl B. Dickerson Awards - February 22
The 2017 Dickerson Award Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at The Standard Club, 320 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago. The award recognizes minority lawyers and judges whose careers at the bar emulate the courage and dedication of the late Earl B. Dickerson in making the law the key to justice for all in our society. Miami Nights: A Casino Night featuring a Texas Hold’em Tournament - February 24
Shake off the cold weather and raise funds for The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) while enjoying an exciting evening with your colleagues and friends at “Miami Nights!” The Young Lawyers Section invites you to The University Club on February 24 for an evening of table games, a Texas Hold’em tournament, and South Beach inspired food and drink. Proceeds from the evening support the CBF’s work in Chicago's legal community to make our justice system more fair and accessible for everyone. People You Should Know Series: Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson - February 28 Complimentary!

You and the Law: New Child Support Law
In July 2017, Illinois will join 39 other states in adopting an income sharing model for calculating child support. The new laws are based upon actual child-rearing costs and will replace what many believe to be an outdated method of calculation. Host Barry L. Gordon and guest Burton A. Gross discuss the ins and outs of the new law in this episode of “You and the Law.

Human Trafficking Video Series

Katie Liss, Chair of the Young Lawyers Section, recently sat down with Chicago-area experts to take a deeper dive into the devastating human trafficking problem, both abroad and within the United States. The interview series was a part of Katie’s greater initiative to raise awareness about human trafficking, with a specific focus on how children are impacted. The series is now available on the CBA YouTube page.

Protect Constitutional Rights
Less than 1% of arrestees have a lawyer present while in Chicago police custody. 100% of those individuals have the constitutional right to an attorney. Volunteer with First Defense Legal Aid (FDLA), and help maintain a 24 hour hotline which provides free representation and protects the constitutional rights of people in Chicago police custody. FDLA’s next training is Monday, February 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Westside Justice Center (601 S. California) and participants will be fully prepared to volunteer with the program immediately after the training. More information and registration here.
