American Indians are the only people to have their own title in the United States Code (Title 25). Some consider them to be a race of people. Case law says they are a body politic, citizens of sovereign tribes. Which are they? Can they be both? What are the ramifications for the legal profession when law students self-identify as Native Americans when they are not? What can, should and is being done about the "box-checker" phenomenon?

Lawrence R. Baca, a Pawnee Indian, spent over 30 years in the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division where he was a Deputy Director of the Office of Tribal Justice. A former President of the National Native Bar Association, he is considered one of the foremost authorities on Native American lawyers & Indian Law. This year, he is being honored by the ABA with its prestigious Thurgood Marshall Award.

Join us for a discussion featuring Mr. Baca and Mary Smith, President-Elect, National Native American Bar Association.
