Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Cultural Rite of Passage or a Violation of International Human Rights Law?
This past December, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution condemning the practice of female genital mutilation/cutting (aka "female circumcision"), the first time that this practice has been denounced at such a high level. Please join us for this very timely discussion on the legality of a procedure that three million women and girls are said to be forced to undergo each year.
Elisabeth Ward
, Executive Director of DePaul's International Human Rights Law Institute, will be with us to frame the issue of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) under international human rights law and discuss cultural relativist criticisms of the international movement to end the practice.
