Violence Against Women Week

May 9-16, 2014, will mark the Young Lawyers Section’s Violence Against Women Awareness Week. The programs and
activities have been created to educate lawyers about how they can help women affected by violence.

Mother’s Day Project at Domestic Violence Shelter
Friday, May 9, 2014/6:30-7:30 p.m.


The YLS will host an evening of arts and crafts, pizza, and fun for the women and children of a Wrigleyville home for victims of domestic violence. Volunteers are needed to assist in all facets of having a good time, including helping the children make Mother’s Day gifts! Men are especially welcome to attend. Contact Stephanie Lieberman to volunteer.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®
Monday, May 12, 2014/5:00-6:30 p.m.

The YLS invites all members to join in an organized 1-mile walk from the CBA through the Loop in support of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®. See details and registration.

 

Self Defense Class
Tuesday, May 13, 2014/6:30-8:00 p.m.

Join us as facilitator from IMPACT Chicago will give a 90 minute overview of self-defense techniques including self confidence, awareness, voice, and physical tools. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to engage in self-defense practice in using their voices, using physical techniques, and striking a hand-held target. Open to both men and women. See details and registration.

  Toiletries for Mothers in Need
The YLS will be collecting travel-sized toiletries and gently-used items to provide to mothers in need at a local domestic violence shelter. General hygiene items such as shampoo, hair gel, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap are being collected. Gently used curling irons and hair dryers are also needed. Donations may be dropped off in the CBA lobby (321 S Plymouth Ct.) through May 2, 2014.

Donate to "Free the Girls"
The YLS will be collecting gently-used bras for the organization "Free the Girls." Free the Girls works alongside safe houses around the world that rescue women from sex trafficking and provide rehabilitation services. Your donation helps survivors of human trafficking make a living selling used clothing while they recover and build their new life.

Free the Girls accepts gently used bras of all sizes and styles, including sports bras, nursing bras, and camisoles. Donations may be dropped off in the CBA lobby (321 S Plymouth Ct.) through May 16, 2014.
