Mental Health Law for General Practitioners - W

This seminar will address issues in mental health law the general practitioner should know regarding the ethics of dealing with a disabled client, discovery of mental health records, and the issues that arise when deposing a mental health professional.

The ethical presentation will focus on how to deal with clients with diminished capacity and the obligations under Rule 1.14 of the Rules of Professional Capacity. The discovery presentation will address the issues that practitioners should be aware of when requesting mental health records and the pitfalls of non-compliance with the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Confidentiality Act. Finally, the deposition of mental health professionals poses unique issues that include both addressing the intricate knowledge of medical terms regarding diagnosis, prognosis, and medication but the ways to address your clients’ interests in deposing a mental health professional.
