Guardianship 101 & the Basics of Elder & Disability Care

Presenters will first examine alternatives to guardianship, including powers of attorney, decision making within the Health Care Surrogate Act, standards as set forth within the Probate Act, and capacity issues. Next, panelists will examine the practitioner’s perspective when guardianship is the only or best option and give a refresher on the basics of practicing before the Guardianship Courts of Cook County, including required procedure, pleadings and forms, and their presentation before the Court.

Attendees will also hear from a local mediator as to guardianship cases and issues that are presented in mediation or alternative dispute resolution, and when to seek assistance or relief outside of the courtroom.  Finally, a local judge will speak on his or her perspective from behind the bench, prevalent guardianship issues, and the do’s and don’ts of practicing in guardianship.
