Ethics Rules Can Improve Practice & Your Bottom Line

How Changes to the Ethics Rules Can Improve Practice and Your Bottom Line
Presented by CBA-CBF Task Force on the Sustainable Practice of Law & Innovation, The CBA Modern Law Practice Committee, and The Chicago Bar Foundation

The legal industry is at an inflection point. Clients, whether individuals or corporations, increasingly demand more affordable and predictable legal fees from their lawyers as their pocketbooks tighten.  On the consumer side, individuals increasingly choose to forgo hiring a lawyer or stop using the court system all together to resolve their legal issues.  And on the corporate side, corporations have an increasing number of choices beyond traditional outside counsel, from insourcing work to engaging alternative legal service providers and legal technology companies. The legal market has begun to respond with a variety of service delivery innovations, and yet many lawyers seem to be struggling.  This begs the question – are legal-services delivery innovations and new technologies enough, or must we think bigger?

Legal communities in California, Arizona and Utah have responded by creating task forces charged with examining how regulatory reform could increase access to legal services.  Starting in October 2019, the newly formed CBA-CBF Task Force on the Sustainable Practice of Law & Innovation will follow their lead with the goal of proposing ethics rule changes to the Illinois Supreme Court by the end of the 2019-2020 bar year.

Attend this lively discussion to learn more about what changes the CBA-CBF Task Force on the Sustainable Practice of Law will consider and how these changes could both help improve legal services for everyone while at the same time help lawyers build sustainable practices.  We’ll discuss a wide range of topics, including lawyer referral, modernizing law firm models, optimizing the use of other legal professionals, partnering with online legal service providers and other business and technology entities, and expanding the limited scope rules.
