A panel of experienced practitioners in the area of real estate taxation will provide an understanding of the real estate tax assessments and appeals and tax sales and tax deeds processes in Illinois. Panelists will also offer practice pointers and common issues for new and experienced attorneys in these practice areas.

Hospital Property Tax Exemption: From Provena to Oswald and Beyond
Two years after the Illinois Supreme Court’s decision in Provena Covenant Medical Center, the Illinois General Assembly in 2012 passed landmark legislation addressing charitable property tax exemption for hospitals.  Following six years of litigation, the Illinois Supreme Court has now upheld that legislation in Oswald v. Hamer, 2018 IL 122203.  This session will briefly review the dispute over hospital property tax exemption, the questions left unanswered by Provena, what the court held in Oswald, and the question that still remains unresolved.

Annual, Forfeiture and Scavenger Sales; Purchasing Delinquent Tax Liens; Effect of Bankruptcy Automatic Stay, Section 22-5 Notice Requirements
This session will address the different types of Illinois delinquent tax sales, how to register and purchase delinquent tax liens, the effect of a bankruptcy automatic stay at the time of the tax sale, and the first required notice that must be prepared and filed correctly within four months and fifteen days of the tax sale.
